Summer is fully upon us and what better time to take your Goldwing on a nice, long road trip! We all know that there’s nothing else like life on the open road, especially on your Wing. The only questions to ask yourself now is, “Where to?” and “What to bring?”

Now, we’re sure many of you have already been on one or more trips so far and others who have already planned your summer trip and are eagerly awaiting the big day. If that’s you, feel free to sound off in the comments section below and help out other riders out there who may have the road trip itch but aren’t quite sure where they want to go. Obviously, when planning your trip it’s important to bring the right stuff. Although it sounds appealing in theory to simply hop on your bike and hit the road, we all know that a successful venture begins with a bit of proper planning. Traditionally, most of us probably grew up with the notion that, when balancing tires, we needed to have lead weights in them. It’s true that when they first leave the shop your new tires ought to be in perfect equilibrium, but as soon as they get some mileage they can quickly lose balance, even with the lead weights. Enter Centramatic Wheel Balancers, who has been a world leader in onboard wheel balancing for over 24 years. Centramatic is on a completely different level than traditional tire balancing solutions and here’s why.


First, the balancing discs are permanently mounted to your wheels. You install them once for the life of your Goldwing. You read that right. You may be wondering at this point, “How do they work?” Good question! If there’s an imbalance on a particular area of the tire, for example, the balancers will shift to the opposite site of the imbalance, immediately restoring equilibrium.

For many of us, we’re in the thick of winter weather. Matter of fact, as I write this, we are in the midst of the second of three Pacific storms headed our way this week. Earlier this afternoon there was a hailstorm followed by flashes of lightning and claps of rumbling, rolling thunder that shook our building. Obviously, for us living in southern California, that is a rarity. Of course, some of you are either blessed with temperate weather through the winter months or continue to ride regardless. For the rest of us, we’ve had to store away our Wings until Spring. Ok, not here in California, but you get the picture.

Not too long ago we posted an article on how to prepare your Goldwing for this time of year. You can read it here. But what about you, the rider? What do you do now that your ride is hibernating? How do you spend the hours that you would normally be out there on the road? Do you plan your next big road trip? Either way, every long-distance trip requires some forethought. Although it sounds appealing in theory to simply hop on your bike and hit the road, we all know that a successful venture begins with a bit of proper planning. Now, we could list what we think is the best way to go about gearing up for your ride, but we want to hear from you, the experts! Winter Is Coming…6 Steps to Protect Your Goldwing

It’s been a long, hot summer for us in southern California. As recently as last week we had some days that reached into the 90s. In October! But for many of us the leaves are changing, the nights have become cooler and before we know it, it will be time to put away our Wings until next riding season. Of course, if you live in California, Florida or another area with similar weather you have the luxury of riding all year long. If that’s you, take a moment to be thankful and remember that there others less fortunate than you! For the rest of you, it’s edging closer to the time when you will need to let your Wing hibernate for the winter. Before you do that, here are six tips/steps to keep your Wing pristine until the next riding season.

Step One: Keep Your Fuel Stable

Over the long winter months that your bike sits, the fuel in your tank can begin to turn a brownish color and thicken. Gross. Over a long enough period of time it may even lead to corrosion, build-up and rust inside your fuel tank. As a result, the gas would no longer be suitable for use. Furthermore, it can end up clogging and ruining parts of the fuel system. If you want to avoid the possibility of this happening, we recommend that you mix some fuel stabilizer into your tank along with some fuel. Once mixed, fill the tank up the rest of the way with gas and run your engine for about 10-15 minutes to be sure that the stabilizer runs its course through the fuel system.

Step Two: Change Your Oil and Filter

After the many memories and miles of riding season, the oil that is left in your bike will likely have contaminants, pollutants and condensation that can lead to engine corrosion. In the same way, the oil filter will be in need of replacing. With this in mind, be sure to replenish your ride with fresh oil and a new filter before storing for the winter months.

Step Three: Replenish Your Coolant

There is another culprit that can cause some havoc to your motorcycle’s engine (as well as radiator) if you aren’t prepared. In colder climates coolant will freeze, resulting in cracks and engine/cooling system damage. To prevent this you will want to ensure that your bike is put away with a fresh supply of low temperature-rated coolant.

Step Four: Care For Your Battery

If a battery drops only a few volts below its rating, it can freeze in the cold, causing permanent damage. Keep your battery plugged into an automatic smart charger to maintain voltage and keep it from freezing.

Step Five: Protect and Preserve

Before saying adieu to your Wing for the season, take some time to wash it clean of all the dirt and bugs you accumulated on your final trip of riding season (if you haven’t already). Once it’s all shiny and pristine, apply a surface protectant to keep it looking that way.

Step Six: Keep It Covered

If you store your bike outside you definitely will want to throw on a waterproof cover. If you can afford it, a retractable shelter or clamshell is great option for outdoor storage. It is the most ideal way, apart from storing inside, to protect your prized possession from the elements. Even if it’s kept in a garage or somewhere similar, we recommend a cover to safeguard it from dust, moisture, pets and people. Be sure to consider your region’s climate and storage location when determining the right cover for your needs.

“My first bike was a brand new ’64 Honda 250 Hawk I’d saved for 2 years to buy at the age of 14. My stepdad grudgingly drove the old Chevy 1-ton farm pickup into town and we hauled the Hawk back home from the dealer. I unloaded it by myself (no small feat) and immediately had to park it as there were chores to be done the rest of the day. Along near dusk we got back to the house and I straddled the motorcycle, bumped the starter button, and listened to that zero-time engine purr like a kitten. I’m sure I had an ear to ear grin but nobody noticed, or cared one way or the other.

I babied the bike up the driveway and onto the gravel road, heading tentatively up the canyon for a brief first-ride at about 15 mph. About 1/4 mile from the house a white tail doe ran across the road in front of me. I locked up the rear wheel and applied as much front brake as I dared in the gravel. The doe paused in the road and just as I came to a stop the front tire gently bumped her hind leg. The startled animal kicked the tire and bounded up the hillside…neither of us worse for wear. She left me with a hoof print on my tire and a story to tell about the first ride on my first motorcycle!”
